A good alarm for shift workers does four things: it repeats on the days you work, it tells you which shift it belongs to, it rings when your phone is on silent, and it does not need a connection. AlarmiFex does all four on iPhone and Android, with a sound you pick for the mood you need at 4 p.m. or 4 a.m.

Set up an alarm for a rotating schedule

Rotating shifts break the usual "same time every weekday" alarm. The simplest fix is one alarm per shift type, each with its own repeat days and label.

  1. Create an alarm for each shift. For example a 5:00 a.m. early, a 1:30 p.m. late and a 9:30 p.m. night.
  2. Pick repeat days. Tap the days you work, or use the quick picks: Weekdays, Weekends, Every Day or Clear.
  3. Add a label. Name it Early, Late or Night so you know at a glance which alarm is which.
  4. Switch alarms on and off as the rota changes. Keep all three saved and turn on the week's shift.

Snooze and volume are set per alarm too, so a night-shift alarm can differ from an early one.

An alarm app for night shift: waking in the afternoon

Night shift means sleeping while the world is awake, with the curtains drawn and the phone on silent so the day does not wake you. That is the case where the alarm has to ring on silent.

On iPhone, AlarmiFex uses Apple's AlarmKit framework, built for time-critical alarms. Once you allow alarms, they ring with the app closed, the phone locked, on silent or in Focus, at your ringer volume. Apple explains the framework in its AlarmKit scheduling guide. The details are on rings on silent.

On Android, AlarmiFex schedules alarms as system alarm clocks and plays the sound on the alarm audio stream, as described in Android's alarm scheduling guide. If you also use Do Not Disturb, check your phone's alarm settings once.

A Wake-up Series for odd hours

Sleep after a night shift is light and short, and the same tone every day fades into the background. Wake-up Series plays at least two different sounds across a window you choose, up to two hours long, and the window can cross midnight. Pick the days it repeats, the same way as a single alarm.

A simple pattern: start with a Calm sound, then move to Energetic ten or fifteen minutes later. Each sound is a separate alarm, so a missed first one is not the end of it. If sleeping through is your main worry, read alarms for heavy sleepers.

Sounds that work offline

Hospital basements, warehouses and long commutes have patchy signal. AlarmiFex downloads a library sound to your phone, or keeps your own imported clip, so the alarm plays from a saved file and needs no connection. Browse the alarm sound library by mood, preview a sound, then download it. You can also import and trim your own clip to up to 1:00.

Some library sounds are premium, and custom sounds need a subscription. AlarmiFex is a free download.
