Does an iPhone Alarm Ring on Silent? Settings to Check

Yes—an alarm set in Apple's Clock app can sound while your iPhone is in Silent mode. Silent mode and alarm volume are different settings. If your alarm is faint or silent, check its selected sound and alarm-volume controls before replacing your app. Apple's alarm support guide explains this behavior.

Three settings to check first

1. The alarm itself: confirm the time, AM/PM where applicable, repeat days and enabled switch. A saved alarm can still be switched off.
2. The sound: open the alarm's Sound settings and choose an audible option rather than None.
3. The volume: look in Settings → Sounds & Haptics. On iOS 26, the standard Clock alarm uses Ringtone and Alerts. On iOS 27, Apple documents an Alarms and Timers section with Match Ringtone Volume and a separate slider when that option is off.

The side buttons are not universally irrelevant: their effect depends on your settings. Consult the version selector in Apple's Clock user guide if your screen differs. A Sleep Schedule wake-up alarm also has its own settings, so check the alarm you actually use.

Try your normal overnight setup while awake

• Choose an alarm a few minutes ahead and verify it is enabled.
• Turn on Silent mode, lock the phone and place it where it normally sits overnight.
• Listen from your usual position. Note whether the alarm appeared, whether it produced sound, and whether that sound was audible from the bed.
• If it failed, retry with a built-in tone and change one setting at a time. This helps separate a particular audio file from the scheduling or volume problem.

Do not turn the volume down as part of this check unless you are deliberately investigating its effect. Passing a short test does not establish overnight reliability. For an important early start, a separate alarm clock provides another way to be alerted if the phone is unavailable.

What about AlarmiFex and other apps?

Check each app's supported behavior instead of assuming all “alarm” features work the same way. AlarmiFex uses AlarmKit. Apple describes AlarmKit alerts that can override Silent mode and Focus. Alarm authorization and successful scheduling are still necessary.
