How to Make Getting Out of Bed Easier After an Alarm
Published by the makers of AlarmiFex. These guides explain options and product features; they are not independent reviews. How we write and update our guides.
If you wake up, dismiss the alarm and lie back down, plan what happens immediately after dismissal. Moving your phone can add a useful step, but no placement or puzzle guarantees that you will stay awake.
Decide on the first action tonight
Choose a short action that starts your ordinary routine: sit up and put on glasses, turn on a bedside light, or walk to the bathroom if that is safe for you. Put the items you need within easy reach. The aim is to avoid making a new plan while half awake.
Leave enough time between waking and tasks that need concentration. NIOSH describes reduced alertness and performance immediately after waking as sleep inertia. A dismissed alarm does not mean you are ready to drive.
Move the phone only as far as is useful
If reaching for the phone is the problem, place it just beyond arm's reach on a stable surface. Check that you can hear it from bed. Keep the route clear and arrange charging cables so they do not cross where you walk.
Across the room is not always better. If you have balance problems, limited mobility or need your phone accessible for assistance, keep it reachable and choose a seated first action. A reachable lamp or a suitable vibration alarm may fit your routine better.
Would a task alarm suit you?
Some apps ask you to solve a puzzle or scan something before dismissal. Before relying on one, check:
- Can you complete the task with your glasses off or in low light?
- Is there a clear way to stop the alarm if you feel unwell?
- Will it disturb a partner while you complete the task?
- Does it require a paid plan, an internet connection or additional permissions?
Try the whole dismissal flow while awake. Choose a task because it fits your needs, not because the hardest task must be most effective. Our alarm alternatives guide explains the different approaches.
Give the routine enough sleep to work with
An increasingly difficult alarm is a poor substitute for a realistic bedtime. NHLBI recommends sufficient sleep opportunity and regular sleep timing. If a very early wake time repeatedly leaves too little sleep, adjust the evening or discuss the schedule where possible.
If you cannot stay awake during the day despite making time for sleep, seek advice about persistent sleepiness. For tomorrow, choose one alarm position and one first action, then note whether the difficulty was hearing, dismissing or staying up.
